Next rehearsal – January 9

Our next rehearsal is with the full ensemble on January 9, 7:30 pm, at TMH. Check the rehearsal schedule to note what is scheduled for the rehearsal. Matt will be conducting this rehearsal, while I am at the Bergen County Band festival rehearsal. I’ll return next week for rehearsal on January 16.

I know that this next rehearsal falls on the Martin Luther King Day holiday. Please support my decision to hold rehearsal. This is due to my unavoidable absence on January 9, and our need to finalize rehearsals as we head toward our concert, only a month away!

Have a great rehearsal with Matt — I’ll see you next week!

Dress rehearsal date change to February 9

Our arrangement with Tarrytown Music Hall allows us to rehearse inexpensively in the hall 95% of the time, because they rarely have a Monday night booking. But it includes the rider that they may cancel a Monday night rehearsal or move our dress rehearsal with notice should they get a regular paying booking.

They have contacted us to inform us that the February concert dress rehearsal must be moved from Wednesday, February 8 to Thursday, February 9, at 7:30 pm. Please contact Claudia immediately if this poses a scheduling conflict or problem for you.

Thank you for your understanding.

Chicago & Handel’s Messiah

Recap from last night

Thank you for another great rehearsal last night. Shelley Axelson sent me a message after the rehearsal and raved about you. She is so excited to come to work with you again in January, and of course, for the performance. Kyung Hee Kim was also very pleased with our first rehearsal with her.

Chicago Exchange

For those of you who were absent, last night I announced the invitation which has been extended to us by Dr. Mallory Thompson and the Northshore Concert Band of Wilmette, Illinois, to participate in a community band exchange program with them in 2013/2014. If we proceed, we would travel to Chicago in Spring, 2013 (probably early June) to perform on a shared concert with NCB at Pick-Staiger Hall, at Northwestern University (yes, my old “home”), and enjoy some sight-seeing and cultural opportunities in Chicago. We would have options for home stays (no cost) or hotel accommodations (individual expense), and you could choose to participate in the group tour arrangements to fly to Chicago, or choose to drive on your own. In 2014, NCB would then come to New York. We would be asking for volunteers to host home stay visitors, host a shared concert (larger stage venue than TMH will be necessary), host sight-seeing, etc. Many of you asked terrific questions, and there seemed to be a very positive feeling in the room about the invitation. We will have more information in the new year, and will then be polling the group to determine whether or not we move forward. At this initial stage we cannot put a price on the trip; an initial estimate will be put together at the next stage of the discussion, should we definitely decide to accept the invitation.

Sectionals

Lastly, we are planning to have sectionals on January 2. Pending confirmation, woodwinds will rehearse with Matt at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, brass & percussion will rehearse with me at TMH. There is also an option afoot for percussion to rehearse separately at a different site.

Final rehearsal for 2011!

In 2011, WSW performed 3 concerts at Tarrytown Music Hall, performed on the benefit concert for Music in the Yonkers Public Schools, played a clinic for Dr. Mallory Thompson and Dr. John Lynch, and earned our first invitation to a national convention. We added outstanding new players to our roster, including our new Assistant Conductor, Matt Kowalski. In addition, we received a $1000.00 donation from Community Mutual Savings Bank, and added two new endowed chairs to our roster. It’s been a great year!

So, we’re down to the final rehearsal. Be sure to check the rehearsal plan for Monday, December 5. Our guest soloist, Kyung Hee Kim, will be joining us for our first rehearsal with her for Puccini’s Un bel di, and our guest conductor, Dr. Shelley Axelson, will also be with us to rehearse the Grainger Children’s March.

I’m looking forward to our final rehearsal of the calendar year! See you tomorrow night at 7:30 pm at TMH.
