Monday at White Plains again

This week:

  • Rehearsal this week at WPHS again on Monday, October 23
  • Program ads
  • Joint performance with West Point Band
  • Featured area performers – Cassatt String Quartet

Rehearsal Monday at White Plains High School

We’re back at White Plains HS again on Monday because Pete Davidson booked a last-minute show in TMH again. See the posted rehearsal plan.

Program ads are due Monday

All ads for the season’s programs are due this coming Monday. Please give your materials to Tom Sweezey. For each ad, be sure to include:

  1. Completed ad form – this form is so important because it confirms the details of each ad. Please don’t forget to include this.
  2. Ad copy (the artwork that goes in the ad space). You can upload your PDF or JPG directly to this Google Drive dropbox.
  3. Payment, payable to WSW.

Joint performance(s) with the West Point Band – March 2024

Here is the information I can share at this time regarding our joint performance project. Please mark your calendars. We will put out a commitment form after the Fall Concert performance.

  • Performance in Eisenhower Hall at West Point – Commander Toven has invited us to share the concert with the West Band on Saturday, March 9 at 2:00 pm (snow date is Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 pm). This concert is already on the calendar at Eisenhower.
  • Commander Toven has invited us to consider a reprise concert to bookend the West Point appearance, to be played here in the Westchester area. We’ve booked White Plains High School Auditorium for one week later (Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 pm), hoping to keep the two performances close together. Final confirmation of this date is pending, as we still have to weigh the costs to be shared with the West Point Band.
  • Repertoire – We would play one half of this concert, and (likely) a combined finale. WSW rep will be chosen from works reprised from the Fall or Winter concerts, or programmed for the Spring concert. The combined finale selection will likely be a work that is not on any of the other concerts programmed for this season, to be rehearsed just for this occasion.
  • As you can see, Eisenhower Hall is a formidable theater, with over 4400 seats. This is a singularly remarkable opportunity for WSW.
  • As noted above, please mark your calendars and we will send out a commitment form shortly after the Fall Concert.

Cassatt String Quartet

Chris Larsen shared this information for a performance of the Cassatt String Quartet on Saturday, November 11 at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining (we rehearsed there once). Please consider supporting this performance.
The Cassatt String Quartet Concert returns to Bethany Arts Community this Fall! Join us on Saturday, November 11 at 5pm for an afternoon of Beethoven alongside great works of our time by living American composers, two of which feature trombonist Haim Avitsur.

Monday at White Plains HS

The next two rehearsals will be held at White Plains

As announced, Monday’s rehearsal will be held in the auditorium at White Plains High School. Please see the home page for the rehearsal plan (top) and directions to WPHS (near the bottom). I will add more rehearsal detail (including timings for each piece) by Monday.

We will rehearse at WPHS as well on October 23, as Karina cancelled our rehearsal on that date this past week. We are grateful to Kathy Davis for welcoming us.

Our rehearsal Monday will include a first reading of the Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Please be sure to download/bring your parts as this is the first rehearsal of this work. You can access the Bernstein:

As I explained in rehearsal, I’ve included this reading on October 16 to provide a preview of a substantial challenge that we will encounter in the Winter Concert cycle, and to provide a diversion from the rehearsal of the shortened program for the Fall Concert (as a result of the inclusion of the Double Reed Ensemble selections on the program).

Ads due on October 23

Ads for the season’s programs are due a week from Monday, on October 23. Please give your 1) ad form*, 2) ad copy**, and 3) payment to Tom Sweezey***, who is once again helping me collect and organize these materials. It’s important for me (yes, I’m the typesetter!) to have all three so I correctly lay out the right size ad with the right content.

*You can download the ad form here.
**You can upload your digital ad copy via this folder link.
***Happy Birthday to Tom today, October 14!

Flyers, tickets, and concert promotion

We have an email blast going out this morning to all of our email list patrons. If you’re on that list, please forward that email to family & friends. (If you do not receive that email blast and are not on our Wix.com list, please let us know and we’ll add you.)

We will have promotional flyers to hand out on Monday. Friends & Family tickets are also available for direct purchase at rehearsal ($10 each), or you can send folks to our TMH Box Office page and tell them to type in the code WSW23FRIEND to unlock the Friends & Family discount (remember, you have to type it in first, then the reduced price ticket appears). Note that advertised price on the now includes the Box Office fee, as per the new New York state law.

The work to prepare for these concerts does not end with rehearsals — we need your help to promote this performance and bring in a applauding, cheering, appreciative audience!

Board Meeting

Our WSW Board will meet via Zoom on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:30 pm. We’re using the same link as we commonly use, but I’ll send it out again to remind everyone.

The Whiskey Crows performance is CANCELLED

Unfortunately, this performance tonight, which Stan spoke about last week, and involved several other WSW members, has been cancelled due to the weather.

Less than a month to go!

Yes — the Fall Concert is less than a month away. Let’s get to it!

Rehearsal plans

I’ve updated the Home Page with general rehearsal plans for all the weeks remaining until the concert. Please take a look. As announced, we’ll read the Bernstein – Symphonic Dances from West Side Story on October 16 to help everyone frame the work we’ll do on the next cycle. I also noted Donizetti on October 16; my plan is to dismiss players early who do not play in the challenging “touchy feely” sections of Pedro’s solo, and use the last part of that evening to work with only the players involved.

Ads due on October 23

As I announced, ads are due on October 23. All ads will run in all three TMH programs. Please complete the Ad Form and give to Tom Sweezey. You can share ad copy/artwork (PDF’s are best) by email with attachment to westsymwinds@gmail.com (use subject line Ad Submission) or drop the files in this Google Drive folder.

Did you lose a coat?

This coat was found at the end of our recent rehearsal at Knights of Columbus. Does it belong to anyone? If so, contact me or talk to Marianne Lepre-Nolan.

Rehearsal on Mon, Oct 2

Good thing we didn’t have any rehearsal planned for Friday, right? I hope everyone got home safely.

This week:

  • Rehearsal Monday
  • Reaching out to assist Farmingdale HS
  • Free reeds for band directors

Rehearsal Monday

We continue our rehearsals on Monday at TMH. I was told that we cannot enter until 7:00 pm because of a scheduled event. We can use the rear stage door, as usual. See the rehearsal plan here.

Farmingdale assistance

If you are moved to make a contribution to the GoFundMe campaign to support Joseph Pellettier, son of band director Gina Pellettier, who was killed in last week’s tragic bus crash, please click this graphic. Donations made through this campaign will directly benefit Joseph. Unfortunately, scam campaigns have already popped up. Please use this link to assure that your donation goes to the right place. If possible add “WSW” after your name to help identify our ensemble’s group effort to assist this family.

Free Bb clarinet and alto sax reeds

Marc Perler, who works at Music & Arts, asked if I could help him offload a large number of brand-new, sealed boxes of clarinet and alto sax reeds to make room for new, updated inventory. I’ve divided his donation into several packages. If you are interested in some of these free reeds for your school band program, contact me by reply so I can prep a package to give you on Monday. Thank you, Marc!
